Welcome to Independence

The city of Independence is located about 24 miles west of Minneapolis in Hennepin County. The city was settled in 1854-1855. The city was named after one of its several lakes, Lake Independence. A group of Fourth of July excursionists named the lake to honor the national holiday. In 1858, Independence Township was organized, and it became the City of Independence in 1974. Lake Independence is home to the YMCA Camp Ihduhapi. Baker Park offers golf, cross-country skiing, hiking trails, and camping. Many horse farms are located in the western part of Independence. Polo is played most Sunday afternoons at the Polo Grounds in Independence. Two major parks, Rebecca and Baker, can be accessed in the city of Independence. The four school districts serving Independence include the Westonka School District, the Orono School District, the Delano School District, and the Rockford School District.
