Tonka Bay

Welcome to Tonka Bay

Incorporated as a village in 1902, Tonka Bay is located between the upper and lower bodies of Lake Minnetonka in Hennepin County. The city has an area of about one square mile and boasts more lakeshores than any other city of its size. The main road of Tonka Bay is Manitou Road. In 1853, Peter Gideon (namesake of Gideons Bay) purchased a 160-acre lot for an apple orchard. His Wealthy apples were named after his wife. The Lake Park Hotel was built in 1879 and was initially organized by the Northwestern Sunday School Association. Its focus was on Bible study and restrained social life. Over 1,000 guests could be accommodated at the over 400-foot-long hotel. It later became a pleasure resort and was renamed the Tonka Bay Hotel. The hotel closed in 1911. Its casino building was moved to Excelsior where it became Big Reggie’s Danceland. The one-room schoolhouse that was built in 1910 became the Tonka Bay City Hall in 1953. The Minnetonka School District is made up of six elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school.
